Illustrated Project Proposal

Illustrated Project Proposal

Possible Genres -

  • Documentary and Photo Journalism
  • Landscape Photography
  • Portraiture
  • Still-life Photography
  • Experimental Imagery

Illustrated Examples of above ideas -

Documentary -

(Edward Thompson)

The above series is by Edward Thompson. I like the element of documentary photography mixed with both surrealism and landscapes. It has given me the idea that documentary series can include a number of different styles, for example, landscape and portraiture. I really like how the above series is very bold and striking and draws in the viewer.

Landscape -

Portraiture -

Still Life -

(Dennis Pedersen)

(Dennis Pedersen)

The two still life images above are very interesting as they are from a different perspective and show bold and striking colours. In this way, they are very interesting and attract the audience's attention.

Inspirational Images

This image does not depict an area in which I hope to explore but does show the type of image that I would be interesting in capturing. It appears as if the image has used macro photography to get so close up and in so much detail. I find the bright colours against the dark background to be an inspiration for my project. I think that colour is something that I would be especially interested to explore as there is such diversity to the topic and different colours can help to depict different emotion, feeling and mood within an image. I feel that this image has influenced me to perhaps explore close up macro photography during my personal investigation as I like the sharpness and vibrancy of the image.

This image is very interesting and explores mood. I like the element of selective colour in this image as it makes it seem more unnerving and tells more of a story. The black and white looks very dramatic and gives a sort of sad and gloomy feel to the image. However, when you notice the girl's bright green eyes, the image becomes a little creepy. Overall I really like the image and feel that it has inspired me to perhaps look into a type of photography where I can express mood via my use of colours, compositions and edits. I feel I could do this by a range of ways such as portraiture as shown above or even through documentary or landscape photography.

This image comes from a documentary series by Edward Thompson. The series is comprised of a series of landscapes where the plants are edited to be a specific colour, in this case red. I think it is very interesting and think it would be an interesting topic to explore myself. I also think this image somewhat links to the two above which have inspired me to look at both colour and mood. This image and series has inspired me to perhaps combine my two inspirations into one documentary series. Within this series I could explore all types of photography including landscape and portraiture and then could broaden my investigation. Overall I really like this image and feel it is extremely bold and striking and therefore attractive to look at for the audience.

My Personal Investigation is -

My Personal investigation will involve looking into documentary photography. With this, I would like to look into mood through the use of colour, compositions and editing. I would like to do something similar to that of Edward Thompson and look at colour within landscapes. I feel that landscape photography is something that I would be interested to explore as it would allow me to experiment with a range of techniques such as wide angle. I like the idea as I would also look into incorporating still life and portraiture as I think this combination of ideas would make for some very interesting outcomes. In my project, I would like to portray a common theme as well as mood which would vary dependant on the colour that I choose to be the main focus of the series.

Concept, Ideas and Issues -

  • Concept - At this stage, I believe that I will focus on documentary photography as I think it would give me the opportunity to fully explore a topic of my choosing.
  • Ideas - I also think that I will explore portraiture, landscape photography and perhaps even still life within my documentary in order to fully explore and expand on my chosen topic.
  • Issues - Issues with documentary photography may include that of gaining permission for photographs that I would take on location and also for any portraits that I may take as part of my documentary series.

Photographic Techniques -

The photographic techniques I have listed will help me to enhance my personal investigation and broaden my study. I think they will all contribute to help make my series' of images more interesting. Photographic techniques that I wish to try and use during my investigation include -
  • Wide Angle
  • Close Up
  • Sequencing
  • GIFs
  • Changes in Focal Length
Photographer Research in this Proposal

  • Edward Thompson - Does a range of documentary series. For this proposal, I looked at the one of landscapes where all the plants are red. I really like the series and this has formed the basis of inspiration for my proposal.
  • Dennis Pedersen - This photographer looks at still life but formed the inspiration for the colour part of my proposal. By looking at his vibrant work, I discovered that this was an area that would interest me as well as it linking well to the documentary series I had already found and gained inspiration from.
  • Caitlin Worthington - This photographer's work combines landscapes with portraiture in order to tell a sort of story. I really like her work and especially like the element of fantasy. This is an idea that I feel may be interesting to explore as part of my documentary investigation. This is where I got the inspiration for combining landscape photography and portraiture into a series.

  1. a good research proposal, I think that the ideas that you have generated will keep you busy.. You are encouraged to research deeper into the work of Edward Thompson and Richard Mosse who both used the same technique and film type to create their surreal images.. Also wrt to your research; provide an explanation of why Thompson used the word "Unseen" for his photographs surely this is a deliberate contradiction (oxymoron). Let's discuss how you might develop your research and photography... I am excited with your selection... and desire to cross genres of photography from landscape to portraiture and still life... well done. Finally, one thing I need to point out is that the "Issue" section relates to whether you intend to use your photography to record/document an "Issue of Concern" not a safety issue, however having said that you are right to address logistical issues (gaining access to photograph locations)... all the best,

    James.

  2. a final comment from me is that the list pot techniques that you have identified can change, it is possible that for e.g. the gif animation may not be appropriate to your enquiry you will be able to explore other techniques during the year. I am very impressed with the progression you have made Chloe, keep it up.
